Spa Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my spa?
  • Add Metal Magic 1 ounce/100 Gallons of water as spa fills
  • Run 24 Hours to heat new water
  • Add Capful of Spa Shock
  • Adjust chemistry (Alkalinity, pH, Chlorine/Bromine) ALWAYS ADJUST TOTAL ALKALINITY FIRST
  • Adjust pH when alkalinity is set.
  • Retain proper sanitizer level.
What does it mean to shock my Spa?
Shocking a Spa is the process of adding extra chlorine such as Spa Shock. It will burn off organic waste, kill algae and clear your water so it sparkles.

How often should I shock my spa with Spa Shock?
You should Shock your Spa every one - two weeks, or when the following conditions exist:
  • Periods of Heavy usage
  • After a Heavy rain
  • Algae is present
  • Hazy water conditions
How can I be sure I'm choosing the right spa?
We have numerous Spa models in our showroom, you can even schedule an after hours wet test (we will actually fill a particular spa and you can come down and try it out !!!).

How much does it cost to run a spa?
You can budget approximately $1.00 per day for chemicals and electricity, averaged out over a one year period.

Can I leave the spa outside all winter?
85 to 90 percent of all spas are placed outside (our spas include a high quality insulated cover to control heating costs).

Are spas insulated?
We counsel against purchasing a non-insulated spa for outdoor use, however, some home centers will sell you an inefficient, low quality, non-insulated spa.

What do your spas need for electricity?
Most spas require a 240 Volt dedicated 50 Amp service with a GFI Breaker (Ground Fault Interrupt), we do offer a few 120 Volt 20 Amp. Models

How much do spas weigh?
Spa weight ranges as low as 250-900 pounds dry, to 1,080-5,050 pounds with water. (load rate from 57.8 lbs/sq. ft up to 82.2 lbs/sq. ft)

How much is a water test?
We will test your water sample for free. Bring it in and we will analyze your water for pH, total alkalinity and combined chlorine. Our water specialists will be able to recommend solutions for any problems you might be having.

Why can't I maintain residual chlorine?
Algae present, water dirty, low or no stabilizer or improper PH.

What are proper pH & total alkalinity values?
pH= 7.2 - 7.6, total alkalinity=80-120 (depends on temperature, hardness and sanitizer)

Why should I shock?
To Oxidize (burn off) organic matter, allowing residual free chlorine to be maintained. This keeps the water clear and odorless.

What is correct water hardness?
Average of 250ppm depending on water temperature.

What should I do for high iron in my water?
Filter with water bobby while filling, and oxidize w/Metal Magic prior to sanitizer.

My water is green. What's wrong?
Either algae growing (symptoms: water may be hazy, wall slippery, visible growth) OR Copper in water (symptoms: water clear with cloud). Call us for the solution. We generally test a water sample you bring in and recommend the proper cure.

How much should I run my pump & filter?
A minimum of twelve hours per day, more when temperature is high.

My water is cloudy. What's wrong?
  • Dirty filter
  • Circulation poor
  • Sanitizer level low
  • pH incorrect
  • Available residual sanitizer low
  • Total alkalinity too high
Why did my water turn brown when I added chlorine?
Minerals that HAVE NOT been oxidized will turn brown when sanitizer is added.

The water turned reddish brown with sanitizer.
Confirm pH level of 7.2-7.6, add Metal Magic & run until clear

Our skin and eyes are irritated by the water.
pH irregular and/or combined chlorine too high (bring in a water sample and we can recommend the solution to your problem).

What causes a strong chlorine odor?
Combined chlorine could be high because there is too much trapped chlorine, and not enough available chlorine.
